Hawaiian Electric reports that the first six Tesla Megapacks have arrived and been installed at the Waena project in Central Maui. The system will comprise 54 units with 40 MW / 160 MWh of capacity and is expected to enter service in 2027.
The project shows why island storage procurement extends beyond battery capacity. Grid-forming behaviour, crane and shipping constraints, commissioning sequence, emergency response and access to replacement equipment can determine whether the system supports renewable integration as intended.
RFQs should state the grid-forming test cases, islanded operating boundaries, usable energy, thermal limits, spare-parts plan and local service response. SolarXport can compare energy storage equipment, off-grid power systems and a project request.
