Storage procurement must match location, network constraints and measurable grid services.

South Africa's Department of Electricity and Energy says the proposed first section 34 determination under IRP 2025 will prioritise 4,600 MW of battery energy storage systems. The policy aims to absorb electricity that would otherwise be curtailed and discharge it during evening peaks or other periods of need.

The announcement points to a location-sensitive procurement model: storage must access surplus power and discharge without recreating a network constraint. Future obligations are expected to include enforceable availability and performance requirements, while the first determination does not add new wind or solar capacity.

Suppliers should prepare evidence for usable energy, response, availability, cycling, grid studies, local service and performance measurement at the constrained node. SolarXport can compare energy storage equipment, utility-scale requirements and a technical project request.
