Acciona Energía is testing a hybrid ultracapacitor and lithium-ion battery system in Navarra, Spain, to validate grid-forming and stability services at renewable plants. The pilot assigns rapid power variations to ultracapacitors and longer-duration delivery to batteries, pv magazine reported.

The buyer takeaway is that grid-support performance can be an architecture question, not only a battery-cell question. Where fast frequency response, virtual inertia or voltage support is required, the control philosophy and response allocation must be defined with the grid-code evidence plan.

Specify response time, power ramp, energy reserve, controller interfaces and test procedures alongside the battery's usable MWh. SolarXport can help frame energy storage equipment and a utility-scale solar solution around the required grid service.
