Spearmint Energy has received a Minnesota site permit for its planned 150 MW / 600 MWh Midwater Energy Storage Project in Freeborn County. The project is intended to sit beside the Glenworth Substation and its preliminary design uses a modular enclosure layout based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BESS equipment, Energy-Storage.news reported.
For buyers, a permit is a reminder that grid-scale storage is not selected as a battery container alone. Land footprint, access, substation proximity, emergency response planning and the local approval route affect the equipment layout, schedule and cost from the earliest design stage.
A four-hour design also puts attention on usable energy, thermal management, auxiliary load and guaranteed operating profile. Procurement documents should state the required MW and deliverable MWh at the project boundary, alongside degradation assumptions and availability obligations.
