BESS tolling deals advance in Spain and Italy

Long-term BESS tolling agreements announced in Spain and Italy are making storage revenue arrangements more visible in project planning. Return and Engie agreed a 10-year toll for three Spanish projects totalling 55 MW / 220 MWh, while EnBW agreed to procure 300 MW of capacity from Zelestra's planned 500 MW / 2,000 MWh Italian BESS, Energy-Storage.news reported.

A tolling structure can give an asset owner contracted revenue while an energy company optimises dispatch. That division of responsibility matters to project buyers because it can influence the required controls, market communications, warranties and performance guarantees.

Before selecting PCS, EMS or battery equipment, clarify who controls dispatch, which markets the asset will access, how state-of-charge reserves are managed and which party carries availability or degradation risk. These commercial points should be reflected in the technical specification, not added after commissioning.
